Sustainability

At Jafferjee & Co. we ensure that our products do not only satisfy our customers’ needs, but also care about our people and the environment by making all possible efforts. All leather sourced at Jafferjee & Co. comes from reliable, ISO certified tanneries in Pakistan that are either members of the leather working group or working towards it as well as also hold international accreditations of quality, waste management and environmental sustainability compliances.
With this we also ensure that all skins and hides are sourced from abattoirs that are regulated, follow all international protocols of animal rights, are not exposed to animal cruelty and where the animal skins are a by-product of the meat produced for consumption. We do not manufacture any articles from exotic skins or use leather made from skins of endangered species.

We also ensure that all finished leather is processed using chemicals and compounds that are not harmful to the human skin and have minimal environmental impact. Therefore, our leather is also tested and approved from internationally accredited laboratories.

At Jafferjee & Co. we strongly support the fact that saving the environment is essential from degradation due to deforestation as a result of increased cattle farming around the world and we are working towards this matter of concern.
We also believe in reduced wastage and landfill dumping, therefore we attempt to make majority of our packaging using recyclable materials.

ROAD TO SUSTAINABILITY

According to EU regulation any substance that takes more than 28 days to degrade is not considered biodegradable. Raw hides take about 25 to 50 years to decompose while synthetic materials such as PU, PVC or any other vegan leather takes thousands of years to degrade. Also when it finally starts to decompose it breaks down into harmful micro plastics, adding footprint to environmental impact. While we are already on a quest to save our oceans and the environment from degradation, that is the last thing we would want. The underlying point is that leather wins on longevity rather than biodegradability.
A leather product stands the test of time and better yet it develops a great finish over time. Hence, leaving raw hides or synthetic materials in landfills to decompose for years is not a great idea. However, we can put the natural materials to good use while take steps to improve its traceability. Organizations like LWG substantiates the cause.
